7/6/2023 0 Comments Mike tyson muhammad aliThere has never been a more visceral, precise and natural electronic simulation of hand-to-hand combat. There have been boxing games for almost as long as there have been video games, and Fight Night Round 4 is, for now, the greatest of all time. It is not just a pretty picture, so to speak. Wisely, Electronic Arts, publisher of the new Fight Night Round 4, didn’t try to find out, instead featuring in marketing materials and on the game cover the truly famous images of Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson, here shown duking it out. But what boxer in contention today could possibly enjoy enough mass recognition to move games in stores? Every year the big publishers vie to put all-stars on the covers of their basketball, baseball and football titles. Most sports video games are built around letting players try to emulate the stars of the moment. Off the top of your head, can you even name a contender for the heavyweight title? There was a time in the last century when the most popular spectator sports in America were baseball, horse racing and boxing.īaseball remains perhaps the game closest to this country’s heart (hardly anyone seems to care about drug cheaters in football), and horse racing can still draw broad national interest during the Triple Crown season.

The One State is cut off from the wild, free world by a massive barrier called the Green Wall. As such, citizens (called “ciphers”) live under the oppressive, hyper-watchful eye of government-appointed police offers called Guardians. D-503 works as a mathematician and engineer, and is the lead designer of the Integral, a rocket ship the One State will use to travel to alien planets to spread the doctrine of complete subservience to the government and an absolute reliance on logic, mathematics, and rationality to govern public life. The action takes place in the distant future in the One State, a civilization ruled over by an authoritarian government. We unfolds over the course of 40 “Records” written by the novella’s narrator, D-503. 7/6/2023 0 Comments Common sense investing bookThen, many people invest in that guy’s fund – and lose it all. As anyone knows who has ever travelled there or spent much time talking to people from that lovely and unique nation, if Hungarians like to talk about anything, it’s Hungary. The novel was written by a Hungarian, for Hungarians, about Hungary. Anyone coming here looking for historical accuracy is going to have to find another book to reference in order to sort the fact from the fiction. My main interest in it was the siege itself as I’ve visited Eger, which is a lovely town with some stunning Baroque architecture, and remember well our visit to the castle and the tales we heard there of its defence.īut Gardonyi is no Max Hastings. This is on the 1001 Books list simply because it is a Hungarian classic chronicling the successful defence of Eger Castle from the Ottoman Turks by a vastly outnumbered army. 7/5/2023 0 Comments Jamaica inn du maurierPlenty of modern authors dabble in historical fiction, but the setting often feels like a gimmick or opportunity to showcase period-related trivia. When I read a book set in the early 1800s, I want to have a sense of that time. And, as she struggles with events beyond her control, Mary is further thrown by her feelings for a man she dare not trust…. With the coachman’s warning echoing in her memory, Mary arrives at a dismal place to find Patience a changed woman, cowering from her overbearing husband, Joss Merlyn.Īffected by the Inn’s brooding power, Mary is thwarted in her attention to reform her aunt, and unwillingly drawn into the dark deeds of Joss and his accomplices. Her mother’s dying request takes Mary Yellan on a sad journey across the bleak moorland of Cornwall to reach Jamaica Inn, the home of her Aunt Patience. This Goodreads blurb is fantastic because it not only captures the main drive of the plot, but the tone as well: For a book whose problems could be easily solved by a cell-phone, it has aged astonishingly well. You may see the end coming a mile away, but you’ll want to keep reading. That said, I don’t want to knock it too hard for its cliched elements as some of the set pieces might have been less tired 1936. The romantic and melodramatic elements are over the top it’s salacious, it’s predictable, and yet it’s so entertaining. Jamaica Inn is the most guilty-pleasure-y of the Daphne du Maurier books I’ve read. 7/5/2023 0 Comments These violent delights micahBut as their orbit compresses and their grip on one another tightens, they are drawn to an act of irrevocable violence that will force the young men to confront a shattering truth at the core of their relationship.Įxquisitely plotted, unfolding with a propulsive ferocity, These Violent Delights is a novel of escalating dread and an excavation of the unsettling depths of human desire. And admiration isn’t the same as trust.Īs their friendship spirals into an all-consuming intimacy, Paul is desperate to protect their precarious bond, even as it becomes clear that pressures from the outside world are nothing compared with the brutality they are capable of inflicting on one another. But as charismatic as he can choose to be, Julian is also volatile and capriciously cruel. He idolizes his friend for his magnetic confidence. Paul sees the wealthy, effortlessly charming Julian as his sole intellectual equal-an ally against the conventional world he finds so suffocating. A talented artist, Paul is sensitive and agonizingly insecure, incomprehensible to his working-class family, and desolate with grief over his father’s recent death. When Paul and Julian meet as university freshmen in early 1970s Pittsburgh, they are immediately drawn to one another. Creating the narrative of our own lives is for ourselves. It’s clear the narrative is not only for others. Julia Tausch wrote, and I’ve been thinking about it all week, “it’s deeply satisfying and, like, healing to me to create a coherent narrative out of disparate, confusing things.” It’s important to believe our own real stories. And what we would do for others, we should do for ourselves also. She needs people to believe in her reality. Tinkerbell from Peter Pan is another character who depends on storytelling to exist. 'Sometimes,' said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.' “Real isn't how you are made,' said the Skin Horse. Certain stories resonate strongly with many people, I think because they remind us of our own realness.įrom The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams Bianco: In fiction, sometimes stories become personified, characters in their own right. As well, I may have not paid enough attention when reading the first few chapters, but I missed out on what some of the different acronyms meant and so occasionally got confused about what the particular thing they were talking about meant.Īnd while there are several women characters, none of them (so far) seem to be main characters. Sometimes, because of the way the conversations between characters are structured, you have to re-read certain sections to know who is saying what. There are some other minor quibbles I have with some of the narrative.
7/4/2023 0 Comments Bone Gap by Laura RubyOccasional flashbacks give the book an unexpected depth. Told through alternating POV’s of Finn and Roza, as well as some of the other inhabitants of Bone Gap, the story slowly unfurls in front of the reader. And nobody in Bone Gap believes him, not even his own brother. Kidnapped by a man whose face Finn cannot remember. Only Finn knows the truth: Roza didn’t leave, she was kidnapped. The story follows two brothers, Sean and Finn O’Sullivan, who live together with a beautiful girl, Roza, in a strange little town called Bone Gap until, one day, Roza mysteriously disappears and the entire town believes it was with her consent. Without a doubt, Bone Gap is a character and theme driven story. The book is so compelling and poignant that I couldn’t help but be completely invested. It’s about a lot more than just the plot. The novel reads a lot like a fairy tale and yet I didn’t feel any of the detachment I usually do with these kinds of stories. It is book that is totally different from anything I’ve read it bends genre conventions and throws tropes and clichés out the window. I have no idea how I would categorize it. It's not really magical realism or fantasy, not contemporary, not a thriller or mystery. What kind of book is Bone Gap? The answer is: I don’t know. It is however, also a very difficult book to review. Bone Gap is honestly a masterpiece and I don’t say that lightly. Just thinking about this incredible book I finished a few days ago brings back all the emotions I felt while reading. |
